The other day I was online reading an evotional by Mark Batterson; one of my favorite authors. He had written on the subject of following Christ and titled it “Inverted Christianity”. He made mention that we to often expect Christ to follow us instead of us following Christ, which is the intent of the invitation. Needless to say, this got me thinking about a situation this past week where my son, Ethan, decided to follow his friends in some actions that got him into some trouble. We sat down as we often do and talked through the situation and I asked why he made the choices that he did. Making a long story short, I told him that I never wanted him to be a follower in the sense that others would cause him to question his morals and standards. I don’t want others influencing my son in a way that causes him to be a follower and set aside all that he knows God and us as parents hold him to. Then, as I read this evotional and was convicted, and have told my son to watch me closely; have I lead him astray? Have I said to him with my actions to watch how I use Jesus in my life or to watch how I follow Jesus with my life? (1 Cor. 11:1 – “Follow me as I follow Christ.”) In the end there is one person that I desire and approve of that my son can and should follow; Jesus! And I ask you to evaluate how you have accepted Christ’s invitation to follow Him. How are you doing today? And can you say to someone else, “Follow me as I follow Christ.”?
